Australian Garreth Renner-Mitchell showed signs of mental distress at Suvarnabhumi International Airport early Sunday morning and then inflicted a serious injury to himself by slitting his throat with a knife.

Following the incident report at 1.30am, police rushed to the scene at Tate Cafe in third floor of the airport terminal to find the Australian national, Garreth Renner-Mitchell, 34, soaked in his own blood from a self-inflicted cut to his neck.

Renner-Mitchell, who was found in the shop’s storage area, was holding a 15-centimetre kitchen knife in each hand.

He refused to allow anyone to approach him despite police negotiations and officers, fearing he might die from massive blood loss, tackled him and took the knives away.

They then rushed him to a hospital while an alarmed crowd looked on.

Police probe found that the man went into the cafe alone and would not talk to anyone but went straight to the storage area and grabbed the two knives.

Staff said he then slit his own throat two times despite the shop employees and witnesses calling for him to stop. They then alerted police.

The man's motive for the active was unknown on Sunday and was being investigated by police, who had contacted the Australian Embassy in Thailand.
